Donna's Apps :)

                                                    Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Assignment #1App Search To Better Support Reluctant Readers

The following are some of the Apps I took a look at and found searching the internet:

1. TumbleBook Library for iPads and Mobile Devices (offers story books, language learning, non-   fiction books, chapter books, grammar activities, class spreashhets, Math, spelling, book report outlines, word seacrches, word scrambles, etc).  I like this one (schools use this already), easily accessible, easy to use, from primary to high school.  Teacher resources offered.

2. Little Writer App - although a writing app, I like this hands on app because it helps with letter identification, its fun and interactive (finger tracing, audible speech feedback work on letters) thus setting initial learning and instruction for letter sound relationships to support initial reading strategies, etc) - free app

3. Reading For Kids App - reading stories free books, can download free unlimited audiobooks, etc.  100 ways to encourage reading

4. Learn To Read (free) reading, spelling, phonics, etc  (online)

5. iBooks - ipad friendly, free app, great for everyone of all ages, offers read-aloud feature, high-lighting words, etc.

6. MeeGenius App - free download (I downloaded this and love it), audio, visual, highlights words as the voice reads, can read alone option, etc.  FUN :)

7. My First Word App, part of the Alligator series (free, option to buy other categories, voice to text, individual concepts and categories, visual to go with word)

8. Alligator Apps - The learn to read series offers toodlers multiple ways of learning to understand and use letters and words.  Numerous free apps for many target areas (e.g. phonics, sight words, story creator, etc)

9. PhotoTouch ABC's - Identification of letters, audio interaction with letter identification, lower and upper case, phonics, various categories, etc)

10. RockNLearn Easy Reader (Story books for iPhone, and iPad), easy, accessible, (1.99 for the app) - development of reading skills through stories

11. Learn To Read (1.99 for the app) - provides Doltch word list, high frequency sight words, caters to pre-school up to second grade

12.  ABC Pocket Phonics (2.99 for the app) - pre-school and early elementary, teaches 170+ high frequency words, letters and sounds

13. Audio Books (app is free) All You Can Books - 15 days free trial then 14.99 per month to access ebooks and audiobooks.

14. Raz Kids - Learning A-Z (on our ITunes U apps from our course - great site free app download), different stories, various reading levels, audio, visual and high-lighted text.  Nice program.

15.  Prizmo (on our course app site ITunes U site) - ability to scan in any text document and have the text read out loud - great for any age.  I really like this one.  Anyone of any age can use this.

16. Flashcards for iPads: numerous apps to support the fundamentals in early lteracy skills

17.  iStoryTime: allows kids to have the book read to them until confident to do by themselves - professional narration, vivid images, children's story books, films, tv shows and classic stories.  Free app dowload, buy other selections for 2.99 +.  visuals and audio reading text, option to read to self or have story read out loud.  Great selection of text but mighht get expensive for individual purchases, especially for families.  4 free story downloads with app download.

18. Read2Me app (free app) - full version is 99 cents - free dowload includes 3 stories, can read to self or have text read to you - visual (picture to go with story) + audio, visual text.  Ok but I was not really impressed with the speed of audio text, not much expression, story very short.

19. Blio (free download app) - more than just words.  color, style, presentation, a world of color (as stated on "welcome to Blio" site) - also has VoiceOver capability.  Can record a voice or download a voice.  You can activate an auto voice to read and highlight text.  Colors and visuals are awesome.  Easy to use.

The following is a good website I crossed in my "surfing" that I would like to share.  You may have already seen this.  Covers many areas:
